If you asked the stereotypical New Zealander to describe the events of 9/11 it would probably be something along the lines of brutality, inhumanity, disgust and anger. It would be the same answer if you asked anyone else in the world. The significance 9/11 had on New Zealand was not because of our role or our input to the event, but because of the haunting images, losing loved ones and feeling like it was necessary to live in constant fear. Many New Zealanders remember seeing the shocking images and footage on the news, or hearing about it on the radio. Although it wasn't affecting us directly as a country, it still left everybody shell shocked, especially the families of the two New Zealanders who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001; John Lozowsky (45), and IT consultant who had been living in New York for 12 years, married with a wife and one child. Alan Beaven (48) who tragically lost his life on Flight 93.
After the horrific events of 9/11 occurred, New Zealand was among the fastest in the world to immediately bring in anti-terror laws, send our troops to Afghanistan and going to every measure to try and help fight against this new and upcoming threat. This improved New Zealand's relationship with the United States greatly which made New Zealand stronger as a nation. Although all of these positive things arose, many negatives did too; although our soldiers were fighting with the Americans which greatly improved the two's relationship, our New Zealand soldiers were highly exposed to injury and death because of the fact we were fighting with the Americans against Afghanistan. This lead to major unrest from the families and other loved ones of our soldiers in Afghanistan.
Airport security in New Zealand and all over the world has increased dramatically after the attacks, which has resulted in more jobs being created as there are a lot more things to do in the airports to ensure everyone's safety. Many new rules and laws have also been created to maximise security both in airports and on airplanes which is a positive thing because the large number of New Zealanders who no longer felt safe flying after the attacks, now have the ability to regain confidence and let themselves feel relaxed and safe while they are on an airplane.
New Zealand and it's people have been greatly affected by the events of 9/11, there have been both positive and negative aspects to these events. New Zealand soldiers are still continually going to Afghanistan today to fight for their country and alongside the United States of America. The attacks of 9/11 had significant events on New Zealand's history and are still seen in today's society. This event is something which is still felt solemnly and will never be forgotten.
